As a person gains experience grilling over charcoal, they naturally find themselves choosing different meats for different occasions. Each meat is treated differently to release maximum flavor for the enjoyment of their family and friends.

Dan,
The Char-Grill charcoal grill is very basic in its design, however, it uses quality materials in its construction. Following the best practices of breaking your grill in allows you to have great tasting food each time you grill. Many people overlook the first burn to rid the grill of excess manufacturing oils. You will have a grill that has superior performance while you don’t break the bank.

The Char-Griller charcoal grill is easy to learn, and following the recipes of most cookbooks designed with the charcoal grill in mind. As you learn how to use a charcoal grill, your experience will enable you to become a grill master in your own right.

Just my opinion,
PD McCloud
Phillip McCloud,
I am still using the Char-Griller charcoal grill my family purchased for me more than 30 years ago. I have replaced the cast-iron grates once. I had no problems with the assembly. I started with the legs, then lower barrel, upper barrel, handle, and table. It only took me about 45 minutes. It still produces that smokey flavor I so desire.
Jerry
I appreciate the thorough review for this grill. As someone who is not familiar with charcoal grilling, I was always intrigued by the idea of achieving that smoky flavor. I am wondering how dow it compare to gas grills as far as ease of use for beginners? I would not know what to buy if I decided to get a grill…Thanks!
MD,
When you are making the decision to purchase a grill, keep in mind the flavor profile you desire. If you are looking for smokey flavor then a charcoal grill or pellet grill is the way to go. Gas grills are great for grilling select items quickly. Charcoal grills are easy to learn and use. If you have any questions and need to see a charcoal grill in action check out some of the YouTube videos for inspiration.

This is a fantastic and thorough review of the Char-Griller charcoal grill! I love how you’ve broken down the key features, like the adjustable charcoal tray and ample cooking space, making it easy to see why it’s a great choice for both beginners and seasoned grillers. The emphasis on heat control and the ability to convert it into a smoker is definitely appealing for those looking for versatility. It’s also great to see the honest feedback on assembly and maintenance. This is a helpful resource for anyone in the market for a new grill!
A Jaynes,
This grill is a favorite of mine. My family purchased the one I use over 30 years ago and I still get great flavor from it. You can also purchase an attachment to increase the amount of grilling room available. This allows you to have even more versatility and make it possible to smoke even more.
Jerry
Hi and thanks for the comprehensive review. I’ve had a charcoal grill for many years now so even though we had the right cover for it, the grill had to live outside through all seasons, and the cover has been attached by squirrels. The net result is that the grill has been exposed to more weather than I would have hoped. I would definitely get another Char-Grill. Even though it takes the extra time to get the charcoal going and heated to the right temperature, my preference is definitely for charcoal grilled food vs anything grilled on gas or electric. I also have to say my preference is for lump charcoal rather than charcoal briquettes. And my other must have is the stacker for getting the fire started. The model grill I have is the bullet shaped or Kamodo style. If I am not mistaken the advantage with the model here is that it offers more smoking possibilities, and another advantage being there are spaces that have different temperatures. Definitely something to consider when I get to the point of making a new purchase. Thanks again, Andy
Andy,
Sorry to hear about the squirrels attacking your grill cover. I have no answer to that, luckily most grill covers are fairly inexpensive. I hope you have been able to keep your grates in good condition since you have had the attack of the “killer squirrels”. You may need to order new grates from your manufacturer. There are some places like Ace Hardware for replacement parts. Great smokey flavor awaits you.

Hi Jerry, I just watched the video Char griller legacy. that was very informative. I have been inspired to get another grill for doing open flame grilling. I havent done that in a long time and I have plenty of fire wood. time for another Grill right. What grill do you recommend for open flame BBQing ? I liked the one in the video but what are some other good options? thanks
Lloyd,
I use the Char-Grill for open flame grilling as well. The most important thing to remember is to NOT over load it with wood. It does not take as much wood as charcoal but you still need to be careful.
Jerry
Oh man, this review really got me craving a good backyard BBQ! There’s just nothing like the smoky, flame-kissed taste that only a charcoal grill can deliver. I love that the Char-Griller brings that experience without breaking the bank—those adjustable charcoal trays and cast-iron grates sound like a game-changer for heat control and perfect sear marks.
That said, I have to admit, that assembly struggles are real. I’ve definitely had my fair share of wrestling with grill parts while questioning my life choices! And no ash collection system? Yikes. Cleanup can already be a hassle with charcoal, so that’s something to think about. But honestly, if the flavor is as good as it sounds, I’d be willing to put in the extra effort.
Is anyone here actually using one of these? How’s it holding up after a few summers? I need to know if this is worth adding to my grilling lineup!
Alice,
The Char-Griller does indeed deliver on flavor. This was the first grill in a long list of grills I have purchased. It is easy to clean and have ready for the next event. One thing I have learned as far as ash is concerned, use an aluminum pan underneath to catch the ash. Problem Solved!!!!!!
I have had my Char-Griller for over 30 years and have replaced the grates once. It still delivers outstanding meals each time I use it.
Jerry
Charcoal grills bring an unbeatable smoky flavor that gas just can’t match! The Char-Griller seems like a solid option for those who love traditional grilling, offering great heat control and versatility. While assembly might take some patience, the payoff in flavor and performance seems worth it. Perfect for anyone who enjoys the full grilling experience!
Herman,
The Char-Grill is not as difficult as one may imagine. I have always gotten the legs together and put the lower portion of the barrel on. In this manner you will have stability for the rest of your assembly. Once you have fully assembled your grill, then do your first burn to rid yourself of the excess oils and paints from the manufacturing process.
